The West Surrey Wine Society invites you to join them and sip, swirl and taste wines from all over the world

Can you tell the difference between Left Bank and Right Bank Bordeaux? Is there a difference between a decanted wine and one straight out of the bottle? Have you tried wines from Brazil, Georgia or Hungary? writes Max Hubbard.

These are some of the interesting tastings given by The West Surrey Wine Society (WSWS) over recent years. Other tastings have included titles such as Crowd pleasers, Chic but cheap, Fine wines – are they worth the price? and Matching wine and chocolate.

In 1988 three friends shared a bottle of wine in a Farnham wine bar and this was the start of WSWS. Currently it meets at The Ivy Lane Club, off Downing Street, Farnham, on the third Thursday evening of the month. WSWS has some 60 members, some with little or no knowledge of wine, or others who wish to increase their knowledge. Speakers are experts in their area, country or wine variety. They are entertaining, informative and often amusing. Occasionally the guest speakers are Masters of Wine and have previously included Charles Minoprio and the late Stephen Spurrier. Stephen organised the famous wine tasting in Paris in 1976 when California and New World wines were unexpectedly elevated.

The evening starts with a welcome wine when members can socialise before the tasting begins. Some 8 or 9 wines are tasted during the evening with the speaker giving additional information and tasting guidance. After the last wine there is another chance to socialise and enjoy the last of the tasting wines.

The tastings provide an opportunity to try wines you might not normally experience and to learn more about how the wines are made and the countries they come from. At least once a year a fine wine tasting is organised when members can try expensive top quality wines or rare wines.

September’s wine tasting will cover wines from Germany and Austria, whereas October’s will feature Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Future tastings include wines from the UK, wines from Portugal and wines from South Africa.

So, if you wish to appreciate the difference between a Merlot and a Malbec, or a Chardonnay and a Viognier, in a convivial setting, then why not consider joining the West Surrey Wine Society? If you are interested, you can attend a couple of tastings on a trial basis before deciding whether to join. You would be most welcome at the Ivy Lane Club. We usually meet on the third Thursday of the month from 7pm (social) for 7.30pm tasting.

Always in our Hearts Appeal

Round & About

Support Woking & Sam Beare Hospice’s Always in our Hearts Appeal and help provide care and love when it’s needed most

“Heroes” is how one relative has described the staff at Woking & Sam Beare Hospice who care for people like her grandma every day.

Amreet Jagpal, 14, said: “It is important to me and my family to let everyone know how lovely and brilliant Woking & Sam Beare Hospice are. They do an amazing job looking after people like my grandma every day. They are heroes.”

Amreet, pictured with her grandma Satwant, was speaking 10 months into the hospice’s Always in our Hearts Appeal.

She shared how the family was devastated when they were told by doctors their beloved Satwant had only four months to live. Her grandma’s strength helped to keep them all going as they made memories together on holidays and cooking.

In October last year she spent four days in hospital before being transferred to WSBH. Amreet said: “I didn’t know what a hospice was until we went to see grandma. It was like a hotel! All the staff were amazing; they gave me and my two sisters ice cream the first evening we were there. The staff even remembered mine and my sisters’ names every time they saw us.

“My grandma died on 30th October 2024. Everything changed for us that day. She was the heart and soul of my home as we all lived together. She was a very strong lady who I will look up to all my life. Every day I look up to make my grandma proud. She will always be in my heart.”

Gabriel Chivu is one of the nurses who cared for Satwant on the Inpatient Unit. He said: “When I care for a patient, I care for their loved ones too. The minute they walk through the doors of the Hospice I am there to support them. They no longer have to feel like the weight of the world is on their shoulders… I am there to lift them up.

“Like all of my patients, Amreet’s grandma was someone I felt privileged to meet. I was able to help her and her family make precious memories in the time they had left together. Seeing the warmth of her family surrounding her reminded me why we do the valuable work that we do. Wherever a patient feels most comfortable, be that at home or at the Hospice, we are there for them.”

All care at WSBH is free and is only possible thanks to the generosity of the community.

Gabriel added: “Together we can continue to be there for families like Amreet’s. Together we can make a difference.”

Uplift with Godalming Community Gospel Choir

Round & About

Christine Sargrove tells us how the inspiring voices of Godalming Community Gospel Choir can help you reconnect with yourself and your community

Life in the 21st century can be frenetic and stressful. We are human beings not doings, so thankfully there is an opportunity to draw breath and relax! Studies suggest that singing can enhance your mood, immune system and lung function; reduce blood pressure and feelings of chronic pain. So, the benefits of singing are vast. Godalming Community Gospel Choir (GCGC) has been enhancing the lives of many for 14 years.

2025 brings fresh challenges under the new leadership of Russell Blackman – the  inspirational and charismatic creative director bringing a Caribbean vibe and super energy with him as soon as he walks through the door.

Vaughan Larmond our accompanist has commuted from London supporting our choir for more than five years. He is the most accomplished gospel musician, trained in six instruments, band leader of multiple choirs including the acclaimed Kingdom Choir. We know how blessed we are to have such a high calibre pair of musicians in our midst with Vaughan and Russell.

Community is not just in the name of the choir but a tangible element of it. Fun and friendship in an inclusive community. Having achieved charity status in 2024, we aim to increase our presence in the community and subject to available funds, sing for the benefit of others with no fee. We do factor in our two main ticketed events at Christmas and Easter, which are joyful celebrations – even reserved Surrey audiences have been known to move off their seats and partake! Gospel is not static – you can’t but move!

GCGC is a non-audition choir, open to people of all faiths and those of none. The choir is run by a board of trustees from the  choir membership.   We learn by call and response, learning multiple songs each rehearsal. The traditional cake and cuppa mid session are enjoyed by all. Recordings are taken to reinforce learning throughout the week. One member Catherine said: ”Singing the music we’re learning through the week and regular WhatsApp chat are joys that carry me through the days until Monday comes around again.”

On December 13th our Christmas Showcase will be at St John’s Church, Farncombe and our 15 years celebration extravaganza concert will be held in March 2026.

If you’re tired of singing in the shower, then in the words of Madonna, “Like a Prayer” joining a Gospel Choir will really “take you there”!

We meet at Godalming Minster, Church Street GU7 1ER from 7.30-9.30pm on Monday evenings term-time. Contact us for a free taster session on 8th September gcgcinformation@gmail.com and find out more at gcgc.org.uk
