To bathe or not to bathe?

DATE

August 26, 2025

Jenny Collier invites us to take the cool water plunge at Petersfield Open Air Swimming Pool, are you brave enough? Discover more about the benefits too

Cool water swimming is all the rage these days and what better place to adjust to lower water temperatures than at the Petersfield Open Air Pool.

From September 29th our boilers will be turned down with the temperature slowly dropping over several weeks. The poolside sauna will warm you up, and you can enjoy a hot drink at the Drive Thru Café after your dip.

Whether you’re a cool water convert or considering taking the plunge for the first time, the pool offers a safe and friendly environment to get used to cooler water and try out the sauna. The health benefits of cool water swimming are well documented and many enthusiasts report feeling a fantastic physical and mental boost after their swim. See website for more information about our cool water membership and autumn opening times.

The cool water season starts at Petersfield Open Air Pool on September 29th. See the pool website for prices and memberships: petersfieldpool.org

If you’re still not sure about taking the cold plunge, join a talk focussing on ‘to bathe or not to bathe – cold water or hot – it’s all about the immersion!’ from Dr Heather Massey and Dr Ant Shepherd, pictured above, from Portsmouth University, who are coming to The Folly in Petersfield on September 23rd at 7pm for a talk on cold and hot water immersion followed by a Q&A session.

Heather, a keen open water and Channel swimmer, will focus on cold water immersion whilst Ant will present the metabolic and cardiovascular benefits of hot water immersion and saunas, with a focus on people with type 2 diabetes. Whether you are a committed cool water swimmer, a sauna aficionado or considering testing cooler waters this autumn, join us to find out more. Their talk will be followed by a Q&A.

Tickets are £10 and all proceeds go to the Petersfield Open Air Pool, registered charity 1195755. Book at petersfieldpool.ticketsolve.com/ticketbooth/shows/1173668350/events/428742377
