Abba, Take That & jazz nights head to D’Oyly Carte Island this summer

Zoe Gater

family

The splendid surroundings of D’Oyly Carte Island welcome you to enjoy lavish seasonal celebrations from 1–5 July 2026.

D’Oyly Carte Island was the weekend retreat where the great and good went to be entertained and now it’s your turn with the Summer Concerts.

With exquisite food and drink, a line-up of talented musicians performing some of the most well-known songs of our time from Abba and Take That tributes along with yacht rock, soul, R&B and jazz, you’re sure to find something to entertain you.

The five-day extravaganza launches with Abba tribute band Fabbagirls with their disco chic blending brilliantly choreographed routines, stunning costumes, Swedish accents, first-class musicians and a saucy but brilliantly subtle sense of humour.

There’s a change of tempo for the second night courtesy of The Yacht Brothers who bring the smooth, feel-good sounds of the late 70s and early 80s blending jazz, R&B, and rock into mellow tunes perfect for a sun-soaked evening on a private island on the River Thames.

Dance the night away on Friday 3rd with Flo Collective, returning after hit performances in 2024 and 2025 on the island with everything from the 50s right through to some of today’s best known hits.

Could Saturday 4th be the Greatest Day? Re-Take That hope so when the Take That tribute hit the stage with hit after hit, high energy dance routines, stage craft, costumes and more as the ‘world comes alive’.

The hugely talented Lance Ellington, known as a singer from BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, and his seven-piece band will close the 2026 D’Oyly Carte Island Summer Concerts singing everything from George Benson to a remix of Pharrell Williams.

The heritage of the island is preserved with a day of Gilbert & Sullivan music on Friday 3 July with a miscellany of their favourites performed by four talented soloists, followed by two family days on Saturday and Sunday, which include four different contemporary music performances from the very best local talent.

Family fun includes free games to win prizes – a coconut shy, splat the rat, ball in bucket, football in a hole and roller ball – and face painting too.

10 of the best places to go fruit picking – within easy reach of London

Zoe Gater

family

From sun-ripened strawberries to pumpkin-filled autumn fields, these pick-your-own farms near London offer the ultimate seasonal day out – with plenty of fresh air, flavour, and countryside charm.

There’s something undeniably satisfying about picking your own produce straight from the source. Whether it’s a punnet of perfectly ripe strawberries, a bunch of vibrant wildflowers, or a wheelbarrow-worthy pumpkin in autumn.

And fortunately, you don’t have to travel far from the capital to find some of the UK’s best pick-your-own (PYO) experiences. Across Surrey, Oxfordshire and beyond, farms are opening their gates each season to welcome visitors into their fields.

So whether you’re planning a wholesome weekend activity, entertaining little ones, or simply chasing the taste of fruit at its freshest, these PYO farms deliver a seasonal experience that’s as enjoyable as it is delicious.

Fruit picking in Surrey

Garson Farm, Esher

If you’re after a pick-your-own experience that really delivers, Garsons Farm more than earns its award-winning reputation. Crowned ‘Pick Your Own of the Year’ at the 2025 Farm Retail Association Awards, it’s a go-to for top-quality produce and beautifully kept fields.

Spanning an impressive 155 acres, and farmed by the same Thompson family since 1871, it’s one of the UK’s largest PYO sites. Expect row upon row of vibrant crops – from juicy strawberries to colourful flowers – with around 30 varieties to choose from across the season. PYO typically kicks off in late spring, just in time for those first sweet harvests of the year.

Crockford Bridge Farm, Addleston

Steeped in history (it even gets a mention in the Domesday Book!), Crockford Bridge Farm blends heritage with a seriously good seasonal offering. Set across 80 acres of Surrey green belt, this family-run spot is a firm favourite for good reason.

There’s always something new to pick from June through to December – think sun-warmed strawberries and raspberries in summer, followed by pumpkin patches and winter squashes as the seasons turn. And whatever you do, don’t leave without stopping by its ice cream parlour – the perfect end to a day in the fields.

Secretts of Milford, Godalming

A staple of Surrey’s food scene is Secretts. Just outside Godalming, this award-winning farm is known for its lively events, beautifully maintained fields, and seriously fresh, seasonal food.

Depending on the time of year, you can wander through fields picking everything from asparagus and rhubarb to pumpkins – all harvested just metres from where you stand. Afterwards, the farm shop is a must-visit – especially the cheese counter, which boasts more than 300 varieties (yes, really).

Priory Farm Estate, Redhill

Looking to turn your fruit picking into a full day out? Priory Farm Estate has you covered.

Alongside seasonal PYO fields, you’ll find woodland trails, nature-inspired play areas, and plenty of space to roam. Kids can run wild, and adults can slow down – ideally with a basket full of fresh produce in hand.

Fruit picking in Oxfordshire

Rectory Farm PYO, Oxford

Rectory Farm has been feeding Oxfordshire (and beyond) for generations – and its PYO offering is just as impressive as you’d expect.

With 45 acres dedicated to pick-your-own crops – plus a further 60 acres of asparagus fields nearby – there’s plenty to explore. From April through to October, the fields come alive with more than 30 varieties, from spring asparagus and strawberries to late-summer sunflowers and autumn pumpkins (with thousands planted each year).

Fruit picking in Buckinghamshire & Berkshire

Peterley Manor Farm, Great Missenden

Tucked away in the Chilterns, Peterley Manor Farm feels like a proper countryside escape. Family-run and full of charm, it offers a relaxed, scenic setting for a spot of seasonal picking.

Depending on when you visit, you might find yourself gathering plums, strawberries, or redcurrants in the sunshine – or wandering through fields of sunflowers and pumpkins later in the year. Come Christmas, it transforms again, with rows of beautifully grown trees ready to take home.

Copas Farms, Cookham/Iver

If variety is what you’re after, Copas Farms – operating as The Fruit Fields – is hard to beat. With multiple sites and a well-planned growing calendar, it offers a steady stream of crops throughout the seasons.

From the first strawberries and cherries of early summer to raspberries, apples, sweetcorn and more, there’s always something worth picking. It’s a reliably good choice for those who like their PYO trips easy, well-organised, and packed with flavour.

Fruit picking in Hampshire

Pickwell Farm, Bursledon

A much-loved local spot just outside Southampton, Pickwell Farm has been welcoming visitors since 1985.

The picking calendar is packed with variety, from early rhubarb and strawberries to late-summer sweetcorn and autumn pumpkins. In between, expect everything from raspberries and blackberries to courgettes and beans – perfect for filling your basket (and your kitchen) with fresh, seasonal produce.

Goodall’s Strawberry Farm, Lymington

For a more traditional, no-frills PYO experience, Goodall’s Strawberry Farm is a south coast classic.

Best known for its beautifully grown strawberries, this is the place to come on a sunny day when only the freshest, sweetest fruit will do. Simple and seasonal!

Fruit picking in Wiltshire

Lotmead Pick Your Own, Wanborough

Friendly, relaxed, and easy to visit, Lotmead PYO is a great all-rounder for families and casual pickers.

Fields are well-kept and full of variety, with strawberries and raspberries in summer giving way to pumpkins as autumn rolls in. Whether you’re planning a wholesome day out or just popping by for a punnet or two, it’s a lovely spot to soak up the seasons.

Young photographers invited to compete in GAP Festival 2026 contest

Zoe Gater

family

From wildflowers and otters along the Thames Path to insects and birds in the garden, budding young photographers are encouraged to step outside, look closely, and frame the world as they see it.

This June 2026, the GAP Festival Family Day returns to the beautiful Goring Gap villages of Goring and Streatley with its theme, ‘The Wonders of the Natural World’, inspiring curiosity, creativity, and a love of nature in all ages.

And this year, budding shutterbugs from across the local area can enter a nature photography competition, delivered in partnership with acclaimed photographer Simon Booker and Beale Park.

The competition features three age groups: Little Explorers (ages 5–7), Wild Wonders (ages 8–11), and Nature Through My Lens (ages 12–14).

Judges will look for images that tell a story – whether through a close-up moment, a sweeping landscape, or a glimpse of wildlife in action.

You don’t need a professional camera, either. Photographers can use a camera, tablet, or smartphone. If you’re using a phone, shoot in HD (24–48MP) to ensure your photos are ready for printing.

Organisers will showcase shortlisted images from each category in a special Nature Photography Exhibition at St Thomas’ Church, alongside stunning wildlife portraits by Simon Booker.

Organisers will announce the winners on Family Day, awarding each an exclusive photography workshop with Simon. They will also award the overall Young Nature Photographer of the Year a family day pass to Beale Park.

To enter, visit thegapfestival.org

Please note, entries close at 5pm on Friday 29 May 2026.

New family mystery trail launches at RHS Garden Wisley

Zoe Gater

family

Become a detective in Surrey this Easter with RHS Garden Wisley’s interactive trail for families – and help rescue the Easter Bunny.

This Easter, families can put on their detective hats and take on an egg-straordinary challenge at RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey.

The interactive family trail invites little sleuths to follow clues, solve puzzles, and help rescue the Easter Bunny.

The mystery begins just as the Easter Bunny was about to deliver chocolate across the country. However, to his dismay, every egg basket had been emptied, leaving behind nothing but a solitary carrot.

Eight suspicious characters were spotted nearby – can your young detectives hop to it and uncover the culprit behind this egg-celent crime?

Armed with a £3 detective pack, children can explore the garden while working together to follow clues, decode secret ciphers, and complete fun activities.

Each pack contains colouring pencils, puzzles, and a variety of Easter-themed challenges designed to spark imagination and discovery.

For younger participants, a simpler trail is available, and every budding detective receives a chocolate reward at the finish.

On selected dates, families can also enjoy Easter Storytime to solve another seasonal mystery or join the Leaf and Clue Academy. This special walk teaches children how nature leaves clues that can help solve garden mysteries, adding an extra layer of discovery to their adventure.

Garden entry is free for members and children under five, whereas under-17s are £5 each. Detective packs and the Leaf and Clue Academy cost £3 per child, with online booking required for the academy.

RHS Garden Wisley promises an un-bunny-lievably fun day out, where young detectives can enjoy outdoor adventure, teamwork, and chocolate-filled rewards.

For more information or to book, visit rhs.org.uk/gardens/wisley.

Historic beam engines return to life with Easter fun and family-friendly festivities

Zoe Gater

family

Experience Crofton Beam Engines’ Easter Steam Up this April, with working engines, duck races and family fun.

There is something quietly thrilling about standing beside a working steam engine — the heat, the rhythm, the sense of history moving beneath your feet. That magic returns as Crofton Beam Engines launches its steaming season with a joyful Great Easter Steam Up on Sunday 5 and Monday 6 April 2026.

One of the most extraordinary industrial heritage sites in the country, Crofton is home to the world’s oldest working beam engine still in its original location, faithfully lifting water to the summit of the Kennet and Avon Canal just as it has done since 1812.

During the Easter weekend, both mighty engines will be in steam, rising and falling in near-silence as visitors watch this feat of Georgian engineering up close.

The Easter Steam Up is designed to delight all ages. Families can enjoy the ever-popular duck races, watching brightly coloured ducks emerge from the pump and race towards the canal, with prizes for both first and last place.

There’s also an Easter egg trail around the grounds, a hands-on crafting area, and plenty of space to picnic while taking in the glorious Vale of Pewsey countryside.

With expert volunteers on hand to explain how everything works, and the welcoming Smithy Tea Room serving refreshments, it’s a perfect spring outing — equal parts education, entertainment and wonder.

Whether you’re a steam enthusiast or simply curious, Crofton’s Easter Steam Up is a powerful reminder of Britain’s engineering past brought vividly to life.
