7 of the best independent bookshops to visit in Buckinghamshire

Zoe Gater

buckinghamshire

In an era of algorithm-driven recommendations and endless online scrolling, there’s still something unbeatable about finding your next favourite read because somebody behind a counter loved it enough to put it face-out on a shelf.

From beautifully curated market-town indies to hidden second-hand gems tucked away in the Chilterns, Buckinghamshire’s bookshop scene is one to be admired.

Whether you’re hunting for your next literary obsession, a thoughtful gift or simply somewhere to spend a rainy afternoon, these seven shops are worth knowing about.

The Marlow Bookshop

Sitting among Marlow’s boutiques and cafes, The Marlow Bookshop is a much-loved indie spot that mixes bestseller appeal and unique titles.

Inside, expect carefully styled front tables, excellent children’s selections, and staff recommendations that may result in an extra purchase you didn’t plan on making… Its author events are some of the strongest in the county too, regularly bringing big literary names to Buckinghamshire.

The Snug Bookshop, Olney

Tiny, welcoming and incredibly charming, The Snug Bookshop in Olney has become one of Buckinghamshire’s most beloved literary spaces. If your ideal bookshop involves cosy corners and discovering books you didn’t know you needed, this is the one.

Originally known for its brilliant children’s offerings, the shop has evolved into a community-focused indie, packed with thoughtful fiction and beautiful gifts. Expect handwritten staff picks and events bringing local readers together throughout the year.

Real Magic Books, Wendover

Beautifully curated and refreshingly modern, Real Magic Books in Wendover specialises in contemporary fiction, memoir, politics, nature writing and children’s books. It’s the sort of place where you walk in for one title and leave with a reading list for the next six months (not that we’re complaining!).

The events programme is growing quickly too, helping establish it as one of Buckinghamshire’s most exciting newer independents.

The Buckingham Bookshop

The Buckingham Bookshop offers a broad, thoughtfully selected range of books spanning fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and children’s titles.

It’s known for its hands-on approach to recommending books and its willingness to help readers discover something new – including its ‘blind date with a book’ style selections that encourage stepping outside familiar genres. The shop also supports reading communities through events and book-related activities.

Crocus Books and Gifts, Gerrards Cross

Part bookshop, part lifestyle destination, family-owned Crocus Books and Gifts blends contemporary reads with stationery, gifts and beautifully presented displays that make it dangerously easy to ‘just pop in’.

The team is passionate about literature and creativity – always eager to share recommendations and insights to help you find exactly what you need. They offer a range of books for all ages, from children’s books that spark the imagination to classic literature that inspires. It also hosts community events such as book clubs and author-focused gatherings.

Chapter Two Community Bookshop, Chesham

A true hidden gem, Chapter Two Bookshop is a much-loved second-hand bookshop with a strong community focus.

Its shelves are deliberately eclectic, offering everything from well-loved paperbacks to unexpected finds that reward a bit of browsing patience. All proceeds support The Hospice of St Francis, giving every purchase an added sense of purpose beyond the page.

Chorleywood Bookshop

A long-standing independent on the edge of the Chilterns, the award-winning Chorleywood Bookshop has been a local fixture since the 1970s. Carefully chosen front tables and handwritten staff picks make browsing feel personal, whether you’re after a bestseller or something a little more unexpected.

Beyond the shelves, it’s known for its strong community presence, hosting regular author events and supporting local schools and readers.

Three Counties Cycle Ride 2026 returns to Bracknell this June

Zoe Gater

buckinghamshire

Cyclists of all ages and abilities are being encouraged to sign up for the 43rd Three Counties Cycle Ride this June, with routes through Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire helping raise money for good causes.

Hundreds of cyclists will take part in the annual Three Counties Cycle Ride on Sunday 7 June 2026, as organisers finalise preparations for the long-running charity event.

Now in its 43rd year, the charity bike ride gives cyclists the choice of 15, 34 and 52-mile routes through the Berkshire countryside, with parts of the courses extending into Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

Cyclists of all ages and abilities will start and finish at Garth Hill College, while organisers have already put marshals, drink stations and route signage in place ahead of the event.

Since launching in 1983, the Three Counties Cycle Ride has generated well over £1 million for local charities and community causes, with more than 200 cyclists already signing up for this year’s event.

Amanda, Community Champion at Tesco North and one of the event’s supporters, praised the ride after taking part last year while fundraising for the British Heart Foundation.

She said: “It was a great day. Thanks to all the people involved in organising the ride. This year, I cycled for British Heart Foundation and with the help of my supporters raised over £2,000.”

The Ride Angels team from Bia Cycling Club will once again ride all three routes to support cyclists throughout the day.

Adults can register online in advance for £20 or pay £25 on the day, while accompanied under-18s can take part for £1.

Organisers also encourage non-riders to volunteer as marshals or registration helpers, with donations going to their chosen charities.

Bracknell Cycle Festival returns after the ride

After completing the ride, cyclists and supporters can head to the Bracknell Cycle Festival in Bond Square next to The Lexicon.

Avanti Cycling is organising the free festival in partnership with Trek Bicycle Bracknell and Bracknell Forest Council. The event will run from 11am to 4pm and include BMX stunt displays, obstacle courses, cycling stalls and family-friendly activities.

Visitors can also meet teams from Thames Valley Police and Thames Valley Air Ambulance, while organisers will donate profits from this year’s ride to the air ambulance charity.

How to register for the Three Counties Cycle Ride

People can register and find more information through the 3CCR official website, while the Bracknell Cycle Festival website includes festival details.

A century of swing is coming to Wycombe Swan Theatre this spring, as the LP Swing Orchestra presents its spectacular fundraising concert, Another… 100 Years of Big Band Music, on Sunday 31 May 2026.

Led by acclaimed Artistic Director Georgina Jackson – who will both sing and play trumpet throughout the performance – the 17-piece orchestra will be joined by celebrated vocalists Matthew Ford and Nicola Emmanuelle for an afternoon of timeless swing classics and modern big-band favourites.

Audiences can expect a musical journey spanning 100 years, from the New Orleans sound of Louis Armstrong and the Paul Whiteman Orchestra to the golden age of Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Glenn Miller.

The programme includes iconic songs such as Mack the Knife, St Louis Blues, What a Wonderful World, I’ve Got You Under My Skin and The Lady is a Tramp, alongside contemporary hits associated with Michael Bublé and Harry Connick Jr – while paying tribute to legendary big-band vocalists like Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sammy Davis Jr.

Fans of last year’s performance can also look forward to the return of the orchestra’s much-loved rendition of Rhapsody in Blue.

More than just an afternoon of world-class music, the concert will raise funds for Karibuni Children, a Buckinghamshire charity helping communities in Kenya through education, vocational training and sustainable development projects.

David Farmer, Chair of Karibuni Children, expressed his sincere thanks to the LP Swing Orchestra and Wycombe Swan for their support of this fundraising concert. He stated, “I can’t think of a better combination for a May Sunday afternoon – listening to an exceptional big band playing some of my favourite music, while raising money for a great cause. I am hoping that we can fill the Wycombe Swan with like-minded people!”

Another… 100 Years of Big Band Music takes place at 3pm on Sunday 31 May 2026 at Wycombe Swan Theatre.

Aylesbury Homeless Action Group crowned Rothschild Foundation Charity of the Year 2026

Zoe Gater

buckinghamshire

The partnership marks a significant opportunity for AHAG to expand its reach and impact at a time when demand for homelessness support continues to grow locally.

Aylesbury Homeless Action Group (AHAG) has been awarded the Rothschild Foundation Charity of the Year for 2026, following a vote by staff and volunteers at Waddesdon Manor.

The local homelessness charity, which has supported people in north Buckinghamshire since 1992, provides advice and practical assistance to individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

In the past 12 months alone, AHAG has helped more than 700 people – double the figure recorded in 2022 – reflecting rising demand for its services amid ongoing financial pressures in the region.

Its work includes housing and financial guidance, as well as access to legal and mental health support, with a focus on helping people move from crises into stable accommodation and longer-term independence.

As part of the 2026 partnership, AHAG will receive a £20,000 grant from the Rothschild Foundation, alongside support aimed at increasing awareness, volunteer engagement and fundraising capacity.

A calendar of community fundraising events is also planned, including a Solidarity Sleepout, Bake Off mornings, pub quizzes and bingo nights.

Sir Roger Wright, CEO of the Rothschild Foundation, said the decision reflected strong internal support for AHAG’s work and highlighted the importance of local charities making a difference across Buckinghamshire.

AHAG CEO James Boultbee welcomed the recognition, noting the growing number of people seeking help in recent years. He praised the dedication of the charity’s staff and volunteers, who support individuals “from crisis to being housed, settled and confident in their future,” and emphasised the vital role of community backing.

Where you can see premier classical music in Buckinghamshire

The Jordans Music Club team invite you to enjoy globally acclaimed musicians close to home between 31 May & 12 July 2026.

Here’s something special to add to your summer diary, close to home. The Jordans Music Club’s 83rd Summer Festival – and yes, at 83 years old, it might just be older than you (and certainly older than most festivals around here!).

There’s something wonderfully reassuring about that longevity. For more than eight decades, this much-loved series has brought world-class classical music to the heart of Bucks, proving you don’t need to dash into London – or pay London prices – to enjoy exceptional performances.

Concerts take place in the welcoming surroundings of Jubilee Hall in Seer Green, where the atmosphere is intimate, friendly and refreshingly unpretentious. It’s the kind of place where you can simply sit back and let the music do its thing.

Who’s performing?

The season opens on Sunday 31 May with the Consone Quartet, a brilliant young ensemble already making waves internationally. As BBC New Generation Artists, they bring a fresh, vibrant energy to classics by Haydn, Mozart and Schubert – the perfect way to start the festival.

On Sunday 14 June, pianist Ryan Wang, who shot to fame after winning BBC Young Musician in 2024, will star. Still early in his career but already captivating audiences worldwide, he’ll perform pieces by Schubert, Mozart, Mussorgsky and more.

While things take a slightly different turn on Sunday 28 June, with an evening of clarinet and piano. Internationally renowned clarinettist Michael Collins joins acclaimed Irish pianist Michael McHale for a rich and varied programme featuring Debussy, Saint-Saëns and Poulenc. Expect both flair and feeling!

And finally, The Jordans Music Club Summer Festival closes on Sunday 12 July with the London Handel Players, bringing a joyful celebration of Baroque favourites by Bach, Handel and Vivaldi. It’s a fittingly uplifting finale to a festival that has stood the test of time. All concerts begin at 7.30pm, making them perfect for a relaxed summer evening out.

Whether you’re a lifelong classical fan or just fancy trying something a little different, this is a lovely way to slow down, soak up some culture and enjoy truly beautiful music – right on your doorstep.

5 ways to elevate your garden this spring and summer

Zoe Gater

Give your garden a new lease of life this season, whether you’re taking care of your lawn, planting, or completely redesigning your oasis.

As the days grow longer and temperatures begin to rise, now is the perfect time to step outside and start preparing your garden for the months ahead.

Whether you’re refreshing your lawn, rethinking your planting scheme, or transforming your space into an outdoor retreat, a little planning and care can make all the difference. From practical maintenance to inspired design ideas, here’s how to get your garden looking its best for the season.

Lawn care

As we welcome the warmer weather, it’s a good idea to give your lawn some extra TLC through regular maintenance – such as more frequent mowing. This keeps your green space healthy and thriving, while helping to deter weeds.

Whatever the size of your garden, Marlborough’s Baydon Mowers supplies a complete range of products from ride-on and pedestrian lawnmowers, to chainsaws, hedge-cutters – with the option to hire machinery, too. More info at baydonmowers.co.uk

If you’re looking to encourage wildflowers to flourish – and provide shelter for insects and wildlife – consider leaving sections of your lawn unmown. These areas can provide pollen, nectar and a host of other essential benefits for the ecosystem.

And if you need help nurturing your outdoor space, the skilled horticulturists and groundsmen of Garden Vista – operating across Hampshire, West Sussex and Surrey – are available for ongoing contracts or one-off visits to make your garden more manageable. Find out more at gardenvista.co.uk

Outdoor living

Once your lawn and borders are back in shape, attention can turn to how you enjoy the space.

After a wet and windy winter, many of us are eager to get outside and transform our gardens into a natural extension of the home. From comfortable seating areas and fire pits to atmospheric lighting and pergolas, there are plenty of ways to make the most of your outdoor space from dawn until dusk.

If you have ideas ready to go – or need expert guidance – Southern Counties Landscapes, based in Wokingham, can help bring your vision to life. From decking and water features to bespoke paving and planting, the team has created hundreds of designs over the years, always keeping practicality and budget in mind. For further information, visit southerncountieslandscapes.com

As gardens come into full use, attention naturally shifts beyond planting and maintenance to how the space is experienced. A garden room could be the perfect addition, helping you create your own outdoor retreat.

Alongside the potential to increase property value, this versatile space can be tailored to your needs – whether that’s a light-filled home office, a dedicated hobby room, a cosy reading nook, or a spot to sip a glass of wine while watching the sunset. It offers a seamless bridges between indoors and out.

Locally, there are some excellent options. Garden Rooms by Drumbeat, working across Hampshire and Surrey, offers a personalised service, whether you choose a pre-designed structure or opt for something more bespoke, complete with free consultation and digital drawings. Planting and potting

With the structure of your garden in place, planting is where you can really bring it to life with colour and texture.

If you’ve admired the beautiful bedding displays at Ascott House and Gardens, Waddesdon Park or Hughenden Park in Buckinghamshire, you can recreate that same sense of seasonal colour and year-round interest at home with a thoughtful mix of flowering plants and evergreen foliage.

For those who’d prefer a helping hand with the planning, raking, The Big Plant Nursery in Twyford offers expert advice and consultancy, as well as delivery and planting services.

The nursery boasts an impressive selection of quality plants, shrubs and trees – including tender exotics and specimen varieties – to help you create your ideal garden.

From ground preparation to precise planting and staking, you’ll receive comprehensive aftercare advice and planting warranties for peace of mind, allowing you to transform your garden instantly with minimal effort. Check out the full range at thebigplantnursery.com

Watering and irrigation

Even the best-kept lawns and newly planted borders can struggle without sufficient water as temperatures rise.

From newly laid turf to established planting schemes, consistent watering is key to keeping your garden healthy and vibrant throughout the warmer months.

While a hose or watering can may be sufficient for smaller spaces, larger gardens can benefit from sprinklers or automated irrigation systems, which take the guesswork out of when and how much to water. Timed systems are particularly useful during dry spells or holidays, ensuring your garden continues to thrive even when you’re away.

For a more environmentally conscious approach, water butts allow you to collect and reuse rainwater, while drip irrigation systems deliver water directly to plant roots, reducing waste and improving efficiency.

If you’re unsure which solution is right for your space, expert advice can help you strike the perfect balance between convenience, cost and sustainability.

Looking after gardens across North Berkshire and South Oxfordshire for more than 30 years, Ian Kendrick Ltd offers a wide range of maintenance services, with weekly, fortnightly or monthly visits tailored to suit your budget. Find out more at iankendrickltd.co.uk

Concrete cleanup

It’s not just lawns and borders that need attention. Over time, stone patios and pathways can develop stubborn black staining that even pressure washing won’t remove.

These marks are caused by microscopic lichen spores carried by wind and rain from surrounding trees.

Patio Black Spot Remover offers an effective solution with a biodegradable, acid-free product that cleans stone surfaces without causing damage or harming nearby plants.

Based in Farnham, the company offers both products for home use and a professional call-out service, depending on your needs. Visit patioblackspotremoval.com for further details.
