Amersham Hospital’s Wildflower Meadow: A Hidden Oasis of Orchids

Round & About

Janey Wall praises Wild Amersham’s efforts at Amersham Hospital, including orchids!

Orchids are quietly blooming in the grounds of Amersham Hospital. They’ve sprung up on what was, until two years ago, tended lawn.

Now, thanks to Wild Amersham, the hospital is restoring native wildflower meadows on sloped areas. The move has triggered an explosion of species, some familiar, others arcane, many with fascinating folkloric associations. Bee orchids are the star attraction, named after their stunning bee-like velvety pattern, designed to lure in males to try to mate and pollinate the flower. Inches away: a pyramidal orchid. How did they get there, you may ask. As volunteer Marieke Bosman explained on a wildflower walk, the orchids’ seeds are tiny and can be carried far by wind. No human hand was involved; the orchids self-seeded.

The Chilterns’ chalky ground is also key. Described as the “rainforest of Europe”, lowland chalk grassland – if left untouched – is one of the continent’s most diverse plant communities, hosting up to 40 species per square metre. A botanist last year counted 140 species across the new patches of wildflower meadow at Amersham Hospital.

The most prolific species this year is the oxeye daisy, which is flourishing waist-high on a slope near the hospital’s new heat pump. Other species include the delicate harebell, clover and aromatic wild strawberries. There’s the curiously named ribwort plantain (not related to bananas), ploughman’s spikenard and cut-leaved cranesbill.

Living and Working in High Wycombe

Sarah, her husband, and their young daughter love their home in High Wycombe. The area offers a perfect mix of country charm and city convenience. Sarah’s work goes beyond traditional home design. She is currently collaborating on bespoke furniture for a local company, blending technology with craftsmanship. She’s also preparing to launch a line of eco-conscious, handcrafted décor pieces, a project born from her passion for sustainable design.

Design Philosophy: Homes That Reflect You

Sarah’s goal is to create homes that are more than just aesthetically pleasing. She believes a home should reflect the people living in it. It should be a safe, calm space that fosters relaxation and comfort. In today’s fast-paced world, your home should offer a pause from the hustle and bustle.

Cookham Monastery Excavation Returns for 2025 with Major New Discoveries

Round & About

Families are welcome to learn about local life 1,200 years ago thanks to a dig at Cookham Abbey between 16th July & 9th August.

Cookham Monastery Excavation Reveals Anglo-Saxon History

Archaeologists have returned to continue the Cookham monastery excavation this summer, aiming to uncover more about life, death, and care at this rare Anglo-Saxon site. Located on land owned by Holy Trinity Church in Cookham, the monastery dates back to the 8th and 9th centuries. The well-preserved site first came to light in 2021, discovered by the University of Reading’s Archaeology Department.

Discoveries from the Cookham Monastery Excavation

The Cookham monastery excavation focuses on a site led by Queen Cynethryth, who ruled Mercia alongside her husband, King Offa, in the late 8th century. This monastery was part of a network of more than 20 similar sites along the Thames River during the Anglo-Saxon era. Professor Gabor Thomas, heading the excavation, highlights the site’s national importance based on recent finds.

So far, the team has uncovered several key features during the Cookham monastery excavation:

  • A cemetery holding remains of over 50 individuals across three generations, many showing signs of illness and poor health.
  • A large timber building believed to be a central communal hall of the monastery.
  • A well with a wooden barrel-lined shaft preserving wooden artifacts.
  • A possible watermill located near the modern Thames course.

Visiting the Cookham Monastery Excavation This Summer

Between July 16th and August 9th, the public can visit the ongoing Cookham monastery excavation. Friends of Cookham Abbey offer tours with tickets available on TicketSource.co.uk. To learn more, check the Friends of Cookham Abbey website or join their Facebook group.

Local schools will also have a rare opportunity to visit between July 16th and 22nd. Teachers interested in booking a visit can email sarah.parfitt@cookhamabbey.org.uk. Starting in October, the Friends of Cookham Abbey engagement team will run school workshops, with bookings opening soon.

Visitors are encouraged to combine their Cookham monastery excavation tour with a visit to Holy Trinity Church, which succeeded the Anglo-Saxon monastery. The church contains parts dating back to the 1140s. Nearby, the Stanley Spencer Gallery offers another cultural highlight. After exploring the site, enjoy a stroll along the Thames, have a picnic, or visit the many local cafes and restaurants.

Make a day of your visit and experience the rich history uncovered by the Cookham monastery excavation.

Amanda Thomas and the Magic of Chilterns Handmade Candles

Round & About

Amanda Thomas, who founded Chapel House Fragrances from her kitchen table in Princes Risborough, tells us about her local loves & candle-making workshops

Discover the Magic of Chilterns Handmade Candles

Candles do more than just create a warm, rosy glow—they bring magic to any space. Chilterns handmade candles, especially the ones crafted by Amanda Thomas, offer not only beautiful light but also enchanting fragrances that transform your home. Amanda creates her candles, diffusers, and wax melts by hand in her charming converted Baptist chapel in Loosley Row.

A Passion for Crafting Chilterns Handmade Candles

For over 13 years, Amanda has combined her love of candle-making with a busy career in IT. She balances her days managing IT services with evenings dedicated to perfecting her candle creations. Amanda shares, “Our chapel has high ceilings, which makes heating a challenge, but it also gives the space character that inspires my work.” When not crafting candles, she enjoys walking the scenic Chiltern Hills, rewarding herself with coffee and cake after exploring.

From Candles to Bath Products: A Growing Range

Amanda recently won a stand at the NEC Spring Fair through Theo Paphitis’ #SBS competition. She’s excited to launch new products like soap, bath bombs, and bath salts later this year, expanding beyond Chilterns handmade candles. She also runs popular candle-making workshops at beautiful locations such as the Walled Garden in West Wycombe and Layby Farm at The Goat Centre in Stoke Mandeville.

Join a Workshop or Visit a Market

Upcoming workshops, including one on July 25th at Layby Farm, offer a hands-on experience with Chilterns handmade candles. Amanda will also participate in the Oxmoor Farm Art Exhibition from August 29th to 31st, including a candle-making workshop on the evening of the 29th. These events are perfect for anyone who wants to create their own fragrant candles or find unique gifts.

Why Chilterns Handmade Candles?

Amanda says, “I love creating fragrances that bring warmth and peace to homes. The Chilterns community is wonderful—friendly and supportive. My favorite local spot is The Greyhound in Beaconsfield, known for its delicious food and welcoming staff.” Her wish is simple: “If everyone could experience more joy and kindness, it would make a world of difference.”

Volunteers Wanted: Bucks Cub Scouts Call for More Community Heroes

Round & About

Adult volunteer Nigel Taylor tells us about Bucks Scouts & encourages you to get involved

Buckinghamshire Cub Scouts Experience High-Energy Weekend Adventure

Nearly 400 Cub Scouts (children aged 8–10) and 90 adult volunteers from across Buckinghamshire gathered for an action-packed weekend at a campsite in Chalfont.

Throughout the event, the children took part in a variety of exciting activities including archery, caving, circus skills, high ropes, pedal karts, tomahawk throwing, water rockets, and the thrilling 3G swing. After climbing to the top of the wall, Matilda shared her excitement:

“It was exciting to climb the wall, and you feel good getting to the top. I went on the 3G swing and the zip wire this morning.”

Amrees, Charlie, and Ethan also described their experience:

“We’ve never been on a 3G swing before, so we didn’t know what to expect. There was a moment of anguish when we got to the top and had to pull the cord. At one point, we were petrified, and that moved into enjoyment. We would definitely go on it again.”

Emma King, lead volunteer for Cub Scouts in Buckinghamshire, explained:

“When you see the children coming back from activities with huge smiles, you’re pretty sure you got it right. It takes an enormous effort from a dedicated team of volunteers to organise an event like this.”

Meanwhile, adult volunteer Nigel highlighted the need for support:

“With large waiting lists across Bucks, more volunteers are urgently needed. It’s a great opportunity to get involved in an organisation that supports children and young people aged four to 17.”

Graham, another volunteer, added:

“I joined as a volunteer about three years ago when my children joined. It’s great to see the children having fun!”

This memorable weekend showcased the energy, community spirit, and teamwork that Cub Scouts encourages across the county.
