Peter Anderson tells us about a thought-provoking new handbook sharing advice & support for adopters
Modern-Day Adoption Guide: Forever Families Gives Real Voices to a Complex Journey
A powerful new modern-day adoption guide, Forever Families: The Highs and Lows of Modern-Day Adoption, sheds light on the joys and challenges of adoption in the UK. The book brings together the real voices of adoptive families, offering heartfelt stories and honest insights.
Published by the Reading-based charity Parenting Special Children (PSC), this guide is both a moving collection of lived experiences and a vital resource for current and prospective adopters. It comes at a critical time, following the UK government’s recent cuts to the Adoption Support Fund—raising serious concerns about access to therapeutic care for vulnerable children.
Real Stories From Real Families
This modern-day adoption guide features 34 personal stories, brought together by authors Shirley Anstis and Zobia Kalim. The adoptive parents share everything—from the life-changing moment of adoption to the daily struggles of finding appropriate support.
“These are real-life experiences shared with honesty and courage,” said Zobia Kalim, PSC’s Trauma Service Manager. “This book amplifies voices that are often overlooked and shows just how vital long-term support is.”
A Practical Guide With Purpose
Beyond stories, the guide includes practical advice for anyone considering adoption. It outlines emotional realities while offering clear recommendations for policymakers, CAMHS, adoption agencies, children’s services, educators, and more.
Designed with Care and Empathy
Available now on Amazon, Forever Families also stands out visually. University of Reading design students Alice Lofting and Mariam Al-Alami created the book’s warm and thoughtful layout, capturing each family’s story with sensitivity and care.
On the 13th & 14th September you can spend a weekend with King Henry VIII at West Horsley Place and experience living history, food and fun
Step Back to Tudor England with Henry VIII
Step back in time at the Henry VIII Festival, returning to West Horsley Place this September for a weekend of jousting, feasting, falconry, and Tudor revelry. This unique event recreates King Henry VIII’s visit in 1533 and promises fun for the whole family.
Uncovering Tudor Secrets at West Horsley Place
Last year, West Horsley Place Trust teamed up with Exeter University and Historic Royal Palaces to uncover the manor’s Tudor past. The estate was once a royal residence owned by King Henry VIII. He visited often for lavish parties. In fact, Queen Elizabeth I stayed there six times.
A Living History Festival Like No Other
This festival recreates Henry VIII’s visit to Henry and Gertrude Courtenay, Marquess and Marchioness of Exeter. Visitors can enjoy authentic Tudor food, clothing, jewelry, weaponry, music, archery, and hawking. The event uses archival sources, including the original banquet menu.
Activities for All Ages at West Horsley Place
You can watch thrilling jousting displays and try Tudor dancing. Taste the King’s banquet and chat with experts in historic costume. Food and drink stalls will be available, along with fun activities like archery, mini-jousting, shield painting, and Jester School.
Support Historic Conservation with Your Visit
Tickets cost £25 for adults and £10 for children aged 4 to 16. All proceeds help conserve West Horsley Place, which is on Historic England’s Heritage At Risk register.

The Gallery proudly hosts a permanent exhibition featuring prints and originals from over 800 worldwide MFPA artists. Kelmscott Manor 2025 Exhibition – Words Matter: William Morris and the Book Arts
Kelmscott Manor’s 2025 exhibition explores the life and legacy of William Morris (1834–1896) through the lens of books—those he read, wrote, collected, and designed. Drawing on the rich collections of the Society of Antiquaries of London, the exhibition follows Morris from his early love of reading to his final great project, the Kelmscott Press.
Celebrated as the father of the Arts and Crafts Movement, Morris was deeply inspired by nature and history—passions first kindled through books. A self-declared “great devourer of books,” he became a prolific polymath, balancing poetry, design, activism, and craftsmanship with remarkable energy. “If a chap can’t compose an epic poem while weaving tapestry,” he quipped, “he’ll never do any good at all.”
The exhibition highlights:
Books from Morris’s student days at Oxford
His annotated copy of The Defence of Guenevere (1858)
Rare early printed books and medieval manuscripts, including a 12th-century illuminated bible
Treasures from the Kelmscott Press, including the famed Kelmscott Chaucer and Morris’s cover designs
Works from other leading private presses and fine bindings by Katharine Adams and the Doves Bindery
Much of the display comes from books kept at Kelmscott Manor by Morris’s family after his death—personal volumes that reflect his lifelong relationship with words.
Alongside the exhibition, award-winning poet Robert Seatter and visual artist Jessica Palmer will offer creative responses through workshops and events, bringing the world of Morris to life for visitors of all ages.

RHS Healer’s Hollow explores the use of plants as medicine in a feature garden at this year’s RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival
Discover RHS Healer’s Hollow: Celebrating Plant Folklore and Healing
Inspired by centuries of plant stories and traditional herbal medicine, RHS Healer’s Hollow invites visitors to reconnect with nature. This garden shows how plants have helped people’s health and wellbeing for many years. Moreover, it highlights the natural healing power of plants and old wisdom.
Meet the Creators of RHS Healer’s Hollow
Award-winning designers Emily Grayshaw and Jude Yeo from Inspired Earth Design in Godalming created this garden. After winning two gold medals and a Best in Show award at earlier RHS events, the RHS asked them to design this special garden. Their work focuses on the strong bond between people and plants, showing how nature can heal us.
Healing Stories Told Through Garden Design
The garden centres on Gaia, a wise healer who lives off the grid in a handmade shepherd’s hut. Through Gaia’s story, visitors learn about both old and new ways of using plants for health. For example, the garden is a calm space filled with plants known for their healing and traditional uses. It encourages everyone to explore natural remedies that have helped people for centuries.
A Closer Look at the Garden’s Features
Emily and Jude worked with local artists to create many garden features. These include botanical artwork, natural materials, and the handmade shepherd’s hut. Each element serves a purpose and tells part of the garden’s story. Additionally, the designers consulted a historical herbologist and a medicinal horticulture lecturer. Their expertise helped ensure the garden’s authenticity and educational value.
Bringing Healing to the Community
After the festival ends, parts of RHS Healer’s Hollow will move to Farncombe Community Garden near Godalming. This space, supported by local doctors, promotes social prescribing. It encourages patients and community members to engage with nature for better physical and mental health. In fact, their goal is to foster “growing community wellbeing” through gardens and green spaces.
Petersfield Shakespeare Festival returns for another walk on the Wyld Side, July 18th-20th, and as Lucy and Clare reveal this year’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be dedicated to a much-missed friend
Petersfield Shakespeare Festival Returns with a Magical Midsummer Night’s Dream
In 2021, as lockdown lifted, the Petersfield Shakespeare Festival transformed the Covid nightmare into a joyous celebration with A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The play’s festive spirit perfectly matched its magical setting. Although rehearsals were unusual and socially distanced, the performances thrilled audiences. Special guests, including a full moon and a rainbow, even appeared, adding to the enchantment.
A Tribute and Revival for 2025
Because the production was so successful, the festival will revive A Midsummer Night’s Dream this summer. This year’s performances will honour the late Jon-Paul Rowden, a talented actor who played Bottom. To celebrate his memory, the festival will donate all proceeds to the charity MIND.
An Enchanting Experience in Nature
Eight versatile actors will again delight audiences with a timeless classic performed beneath an ancient oak tree. This magical spot lies within the woodland wonders of Wylds Christmas Tree Farm in Liss.
The evening starts with tasty refreshments and live music at the Bottoms Up bar. Afterwards, the audience will promenade “en masse” up the hill and enter the enchanted forest. Here, fairies wage war, lovers quarrel, and an amateur acting troupe secretly rehearses a play. What could possibly go wrong?
Family-Friendly Festival Atmosphere
Visitors can arrive early to enjoy the family-friendly festival vibe and beautiful surroundings before the show begins. Tickets remain affordable to encourage everyone to join, and concessions are available. For more details and bookings, visit psfest.co.uk or purchase tickets in person at One Tree Books, Lavant Street, Petersfield GU32 3EL.
About Petersfield Shakespeare Festival and Wylds Farm
Now in its 13th season, the Petersfield Shakespeare Festival continues to enrich the local cultural scene. It started in 2012 when drama teachers united to feed their creative appetites during summer holidays. Since then, it has delighted audiences with outdoor theatre.
Wylds Farm focuses on creating family festive experiences for adults and children to remember. The farm hosts seasonal events year-round. For example, in November and December, the Christmas spirit shines during the Postbox Trail. Visitors send letters to Father Christmas and follow woodland signs to find the iconic red postbox atop a small hill.

Explore Winchester Science Centre Bubbles Outdoors
Step outside into the stunning South Downs National Park and create your own giant bubbles with special bubble wands. Experiment with shapes like triangles and squares and see who can blow the biggest bubble. The bubbles float across the beautiful skyline, adding to the magic of the experience. Families can also enjoy bubble storytime sessions with science Inspirers, blending storytelling and science in a fun way.
Join Live Bubble Shows and Science Demonstrations
Inside the centre, don’t miss the popular Bubble Show in the Science Theatre. This 20-minute live event combines fun experiments with fascinating facts about bubbles’ chemistry and physics. Watch bubbles bounce and even set on fire, bringing science to life in an exciting and memorable way.
Discover Natural and Synthetic Winchester Science Centre Bubbles
Using microscopes and hands-on activities, children and adults can explore how bubbles form naturally in the environment and how synthetic bubbles behave differently. Visitors can create their own bubble wands to take home and capture special moments with unique photo opportunities—like standing inside a giant bubble.

Love going to the theatre but no one to go with? Adam Green set up West End Outings to make the joy of live performance more accessible for all
A Theatre Community for Everyone West End Outings began in 2019 when Woking-based Adam Green started a small Facebook group for friends wanting to enjoy theatre without going alone. Over time, this grew into one of the UK’s most vibrant LGBTQ+ theatre communities.
More Than Just Theatre The group offers more than theatre visits. It includes All Together socials, women’s groups, Over 50s gatherings, and weekend getaways. These activities help people connect, save money, and find a safe space to meet new friends from across the country.
About Adam Green Adam has hosted over 135 events in three years. Many locals may remember him as the pianist at Woking New Victoria Theatre. Before that, he spent a decade acting in the West End. He wants everyone, whether single, couples, or families, to feel welcomed and excited about theatre.
How to Get Involved West End Outings started on Facebook but now reaches members through Instagram, its website, and even a mobile app. A yearly membership lets people book as many events as they like. Recently, they privately booked three London theatres, giving members a unique chance to enjoy shows together.
Building Community After the Pandemic Since the pandemic, many have lost social connections due to remote work and fewer local groups. West End Outings fills that gap by offering a friendly, inclusive place where theatre lovers can reconnect and make lasting friendships.
