Head to Blenheim Palace for all manner of countryside pursuits from July 26th to 28th

The Game Fair makes its return to Blenheim Palace for people passionate about countryside pursuits, and the Great British countryside features everything from fishing, fantastic food and family activities to shooting, shopping and super VIP glamping – there truly is no other place a countryside lover would want to be for the last weekend of July.

If it’s a shopping experience you’re after then you’re in the right place – no high street can offer the variety you’ll see here. Performance clothing, traditional tweeds, fishing rods, dog beds, shotguns and rifles, optics, ammunition, homewares, designer wear, footwear, vintage, art, machinery… better still, you can try before you buy (which you can’t online). If you’re food orientated then don’t worry – the Totally Food area features the best of local artisan producers offering everything from pheasant goujons to beers from micro breweries and all of the wonderful produce you will find here is sourced from the British countryside and sustainable resources worldwide. Looking for culinary inspiration? Watch a demonstration in the BASC Wild Food Theatre, or treat yourself to a sit-down lunch cooked by a celebrity chef.

Country sport is in full swing at The Game Fair – from gundogs and fishing to shooting, pugs and drummers displays and archery, this is just some the action you can expect to see. Competitions for gundogs and shooting such as The Gundog International and Game Fair 50 bird Sporting make a great spectacle, but if you want to give something a go yourself, there’s opportunities to try clay shooting, fly fishing, coarse fishing, fly tying, ferreting and you can even bring your dog to enter one of our have-a-go-competitions – Bale jumping, Open, Scramble, the Novice and Junior Scurry, as well as BASC’s own Scurry competitions – you may even win one of our daily prizes!

The main arena will be alive with action including hound Parades, Scurry Driving, Mounted Games, Falconry, Freddy Steele with his stunning horses in a Spectacle of Equitation, Inter Hunt Relay, oh and of course the Shetland Grand National which is thrilling and truly loved by all!

The Fishing Village offers a great insight into the sport and you can learn to fish, cast a fly and get advice on buying the right tackle. Throughout the three days you will be treated to competitions, discussions and demonstrations. Coaches from the Canal and River Trust and experienced instructors will help you catch your first fish or cast your first fly on the river. Visitors will be able to get up close to some of our native fish species in the Environment Agency fish tank, listen to talks in the Landing Stage theatre, watch angling demonstrations beside the river and look over some amazing fishing boats boasting all the latest electronics.

Perhaps shooting is more ‘you’ – The Game Fair has one of the largest shooting lines at any event, delivered by the experienced team from one of the world’s best-loved shooting grounds and sporting agencies, E.J. Churchill. If you’re looking to buy a new of second-hand gun or rifle, head down to Gunmakers Row, where you can check your gun fit and find knowledgeable advice from experts to help you make the right choice. What about competing or having a go at clay shooting? Visit The Shooting Line where qualified coaches will help you to take your first steps in shooting clays or advise on your technique. You could also take part in the various clay shooting competitions that will be running.

If dogs are your thing, visit experienced dog owners, handlers and breeders in The Sporting Dog Pavilion which will feature some familiar and some more unusual dog breeds. Whether you simply want to discover more about the many and varied breeds that work in the filed or you are looking for your next shooting companion, you’ll get a fantastic heads-up from the team of experts on hand, who will be only too happy to offer their thoughts. The afore mentioned Gundog International is not to be underestimated – If you want to see the top gundogs from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales go head-to-head in a purpose-built arena complete with authentic cover crop, jumps and water, then make sure you catch the Home International team competition. As the UK’s foremost team event, this hotly contested competition always produces intense rivalry between the top dog handlers from each country. This competition has been held every year since 1969 and has always been the centrepiece of the gundog events at The Game Fair.

The Carter Jonas Game Fair Theatre offers the chance to watch exciting debates and sparkling conversations live on stage, hosted by Charlie Jacoby from Fieldsports Channel. Take the opportunity to sit down and enjoy the lively mix of content that is both thought-provoking and enjoyable, covering a range of topics surrounding the countryside.

Family days out are important to us, and there is something for every age group at The Game Fair. Expect live arena shows, tractors, hands-on activities, dogs, horses, archery, air gunning and more! You and your family certainly won’t be bored! Head to the main arena for a mix of exciting competitions, educational demonstrations, thrills and perhaps even a few spills! Spend some time away from the hustle and bustle of the stand to marvel in the different skills on show from the different aspects of the countryside.

Why not make a special occasion of it and upgrade to one of our VIP Enclosure packages? With the best of British hospitality and the chance to escape the crowds in an exclusive space, you can choose from one of our four packages – Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum, with prices starting from £99.

Make a weekend of it by booking into a glamping spot in a fully furnished and carpeted Bell Tent or bring your own tent or motorhome for a camping experience within walking distance of the action.

Tiger Who Came To Tea prizes

Round & About

We’ve teamed up to offer tickets & prizes to celebrate The Tiger Who Came To Tea returning to Theatre Royal Haymarket and here’s a Q&A with the book’s author Judith Kerr OBE

Back by popular demand, the Olivier Award nominated stage production of The Tiger Who Came to Tea returns to Theatre Royal Haymarket this summer, celebrating its 10th West End season.

And we’ve teamed up with our friends at the theatre to offer one lucky winner a family theatre ticket (for four people) and a goodie bag.

A musical play adapted and directed by David Wood OBE, based on the classic tale by Judith Kerr OBE, The Tiger Who Came to Tea opens at Theatre Royal Haymarket on Monday, 8th July, until Sunday 1st September, playing for a strictly limited eight-week season.

The 2024 West End cast includes: Abbey Norman (Sophie), Jenanne Redman (Mummy), Benjamin Stone (Daddy, Milkman, Postman, Tiger), Myles Waby (Understudy) and Sarah Horton (Alternative Sophie/Mummy).

Here’s a Q&A with the iconic book’s author, Judith Kerr, just before she died in 2019.

Q. The Tiger Who Came to Tea celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. What do you think makes the story so timelessly popular?
“I think because it was a bedtime story for my three-year-old daughter and I put in all the things that she liked and she seems to have had normal tastes. I’d made up the other stories for her but this was the one my daughter she liked best, about a tiger who came to tea. She used to say ‘Talk the tiger!’ and so I told it so many times. I was very pleasantly surprised when they said they’d publish it. I certainly had no idea that it would be success it has become.”

Q. What was your inspiration for The Tiger Who Came to Tea?
“Quite often we went to the zoo. In those days, before David Attenborough, it was the only way you could see animals. We found the tigers just so incredibly beautiful.”

Q. Which do you enjoy most? Writing or illustrating? And why?
“Illustrating, because I always wanted to draw from a young age and I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to. Even now, I try to draw every day if I can. My visual memory holds on to things – how people move and walk on the street, how their trousers hang. Those things stay with you.”

Q. What do you like to see most in children’s literature today?
“I love illustrators and it’s a wonderful time for children’s illustration and illustrated books and not just picture books. I have done an illustrated chapter book myself called Mister Cleghorn’s Seal, that was published a few years ago.”

Q. Who was your favourite author as a child when you were growing up?
“I loved to read fairy tales, particularly when they were illustrated.”

Q. You seem to know instinctively what sparks a child’s imagination, is there anything in your own life that has enabled you to write in that way?
“I suppose it was from watching my own children when they were small and working out what they liked. I wasn’t able to work before my children stayed for lunch at school. I think I must have a good memory as I remember such a lot of my own childhood and especially the time leaving Germany and coming to Paris and London.”

Q. What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?
“I suppose it has to be surviving until 95!”

Q. The Tiger Who Came to Tea also celebrates over 10 years on stage. What do you think David Wood has brought to the stage adaptation of Tiger?
“A brilliant imagination and years of remarkable expertise.”

Q. Do you have a favourite song from the stage show?
“My favourite is the song Different In The Dark.”

Q. Do you have a motto for life?
“No so much a motto, but I would say work is a great help.”

Eastbury Hotel & Spa review

Liz Nicholls

prize

Lazing in the bubbling jacuzzi, gazing up at the round ceiling window, where concentric circles of rain pulse outwards… this is about as close to Zen as I can remember feeling.

I have entered the round, inviting, Hobbit-like door to the bijou spa at the bottom of the walled garden at The Eastbury in Sherbourne. Inside is a nurturing safe haven that feels a million miles from the daily hubbub, with a luxury wet spa, hydrotherapy tub, sauna and treatment room where even the most frazzled can feel their cares melt away.

Treatments on offer from healing hands include nourishing facials, stone therapy and deep tissue massage, using the premier cru of wellness brands Caudalie. There is also an outdoor jacuzzi for good measure, and you can book exclusive use of the spa suite or perhaps treat yourself to a nourishing body wrap or tub and scrub.

If you are worn out by your own life and need a restorative change of scene, I can think of few places more suited than The Eastbury. The recently refurbished 26-bedroom country house hotel is the winner of the “best value experience” in the prestigious Conde Nast 2022 awards for Excellence.

Sherborne – the ancient capital of Dorset – is a sleepy market town with many local gardens (Stourhead, Minterne, Tintinhill), fly fishing, hot air ballooning, Sherborne Castle and Abbey. The area is surrounded by National Trust and English Heritage Sites and is a great base from which to explore the Dorset coast including Chesil Beach, Durdle Door, West Bay and Brownsea Island (a drive away of less than 45 minutes).

The five Victorian Garden Potting Shed Suites are beautifully appointed, snuggly warm and cosy, thanks to their underfloor heating. Each one has its own entrance and tri-folding rear doors so you can enjoy the private terrace and gaze at the stars, alongside the fire pit. These get-away suites are nestled in the award-winning gardens of the 17th century stone period property, where the outdoor seating, croquet, badminton, table tennis and large chess set add to the quirky charm of this luxury getaway. The newly refurbished Eastbury Cottage is has three generous bedrooms, if you’re looking for a group stay.

There are some dog-friendly rooms with comfy canine beds, bowls, treats, a squeaky dog toy and even a welcome letter from the owner’s chihuahua Monty. Each beautiful room offers a walks guide so that you can venture out to make the most of the local scenery, including Badbury Rings, Glastonbury Tor and the River Yeo.

Whatever your stress levels, a stay promises to top up your mojo levels and leave you feeling pampered, refreshed and ready to face the world anew. Aaaaaaand relax!

Doubles from £206 B&B per night. Eastbury Cottage price based on two people is £625 per night or £4,375 for seven nights. Price based on four people or more is £850 per night or £5,950 for seven nights on a self-catering basis. Includes a private garden, six-seater outdoor table, barbecue and a classic garden hot tub (available from the end of September). Minimum two-night stay. Bill’s Newbury

Round & About

prize

It’s time to take a fresh look at a familiar face with the grand re-opening of Bill’s in Newbury today (23rd September).

The popular restaurant and bar in Market Place is staying true to its roots but adding a touch of glamour with modern décor, luxurious velvet seating and sparkling chandeliers.

It’s the ideal spot for lunch, after work cocktails or dinner and to celebrate the relaunch they are offering you the chance to win dinner for six people. Anyone booking a table online during the opening week (23rd to 29th September) will automatically be entered into the prize draw.

And for the first two weeks after the relaunch, diners will be asked to vote for their chosen charity – West Berkshire Mencap, Helen & Douglas House and The Samaritans – to support for the next three months. The successful charity will be revealed on 7th October.

The management team in Newbury have been working to build relationships with the local community and the restaurant will be making a 50p contribution for each ‘burger of the week’ sold with the money going to the chosen charity.

Founder of the restaurant chain, which started in Lewes, Sussex in 2000, Bill Collison said: “Good quality food in a welcoming environment has always been at the core of Bill’s. We have loved being in our current spot in Newbury for the past five years and we felt the time was right for a fresh new look for the restaurant.

“We are proud to create restaurants that are full of vibrant colour and vintage trinkets. I believe that the new look transcends all dining times which will only enhance our diners’ experience and showcase our vibrant food and drinks.”
