See the World Through a New Lens at the Magna Carta Photography Exhibition

Round & About

Head to Cooper’s Hill House for this year’s exhibition on September 8th

Magna Carta Photography Group Exhibition Returns with Fresh Focus and Local Flair

Capturing Moments for a Cause

The Magna Carta Photography Group exhibition is back and promises to be even better than last year’s popular event. Set for Monday, 8th September, the exhibition runs from 12pm to 5pm at Cooper’s Hill House, Magna Carta Park in Englefield Green (TW20 0JY).

Last year, the exhibition raised nearly £1,000 for charity. This year, the group hopes to match or exceed that success with a rich display of powerful imagery and artistic vision.

What to Expect at the Magna Carta Photo Exhibition

The Magna Carta Photography Group will showcase images across various themes including architecture, water, skies, people, and birds. Whether shot on an iPhone or a professional camera, each photograph tells a story—some capturing fleeting moments, others reflecting hours of care, setup, and editing.

Two key members of the group—Chris Towler and David Hacker—are both award-winning amateur photographers. Chris’s work focuses on the natural beauty of Magna Carta Park, while David brings back compelling photographs from international travels and unfamiliar cultures.

Why the Magna Carta Photo Exhibition Supports Local Charities

The exhibition offers more than just visual art. It invites visitors to explore Cooper’s Hill House and the surrounding Magna Carta Park, with scenic views across to Windsor Castle.

Entry remains just £5, which includes a welcome drink. Guests will also have the chance to purchase photographs and other artistic items. All proceeds go to two worthy causes: Woking and Sam Beare Hospice and the mental health charity Mind.

Croquet Made Fun: Dogmersfield’s Welcoming Club for All Abilities

Round & About

Peter Fennell of Dogmersfield Croquet Club invites you to pick up a mallet and have a go at croquet at the open day this month

Discover the Fun of Golf Croquet at Dogmersfield

Croquet often gains attention only when senior politicians play—but it’s actually a fast-paced, fun activity lasting just 30–40 minutes.

Learn on a Friendly Lawn

The Dogmersfield Croquet Club plays on a smaller lawn at the Four Seasons Hotel, ideal for beginners. Members get free equipment—just bring flat-soled shoes. In return, they occasionally help instruct hotel guests.

What Is Golf Croquet?

This simplified version of croquet emphasizes tactics over technique. You only need to accurately propel your ball through hoops. Games are sociable and fun. Players quickly get used to mallets, balls, and the thrill of hitting a hoop.

Inclusive and Equal

Golf Croquet is truly accessible: young or old, male or female, everyone competes equally. Britain leads the world in this sport, which mixes skill and strategy.

How the Game Works

Two, three, or four players contest the same hoop at once. Once someone scores a hoop, everyone moves on. Winning requires scoring seven hoops. Games typically last 30–40 minutes, and every player receives a skill rating. They can enter club tournaments or play friendly matches with other clubs.

Club Social Events

Weekly mix-in sessions offer casual play. Plus, there’s a “bring your own wine and nibbles” social after each game and other social events throughout the season.

Join the Club

Membership costs just £30 per year (April–October season) with a £10 joining fee. Newcomers are always welcome. To learn more or get started, come to our Open Day on Saturday, 23 August, 2–4 pm, or call our secretary Rowenna on 01252 616429. You’re welcome to visit at other times too!

To keep everyone fed, watered and full of energy during this fabulous day, there will be plenty of refreshments with a Pimms Tent, a Gin Fest tent, a Beer Tent with a great selection of real ales – you can’t have a festival without beer. The mostly local food stalls will serve up Indian street food, Spanish paella, a classic BBQ, Churros, coffee and soft drinks. A face painter and a festive fun stall will keep younger visitors busy with more events planned. Bring your blanket, tables, chairs and food – if you can resist the enticing smells from the stalls!

The event is run by a small team of volunteers working in partnership with The Harlington and Fleet Town Council. Lost In The Forest with Colin Heber-Percy

Round & About

In his new book, Pewsey vicar & author Colin Heber writes about Savernake Forest & reflects on the joy of not belonging

A Confession About Belonging

Belonging in Savernake Forest isn’t as straightforward as it sounds. On the face of it, I’m the least qualified person in the world to write about not belonging. After all, I’m belonging personified: a privileged, straight, white man—and a vicar in the Church of England, for heaven’s sake. If that doesn’t scream belonging, I don’t know what does.

Two Lives: Freelance Screenwriter vs. Vicar

Before ordination, I worked as a freelance screenwriter. My shoulder bag served as my office—filled with a laptop, screenplay drafts, a toothbrush, and a packet of fags. Now, that bag holds a prayer book, palm cross, pencils, holy oil, and vapes. This change has been a profound blessing (well, maybe not the vapes), but blessings often take on a cost.

From Outsider to Insider

Previously, I never belonged anywhere. I jumped from contract to contract and town to town. If I felt like an outsider, it was because I was. Now, I live and work within an ancient institution—I’m in holy orders. I have colleagues, congregations, and a calling. They call me to belong here, but how? I’m an old dog learning a new trick.

The Mystery of Belonging

I’ve tried to master belonging, and I’ve seen some success. Yet the more I try, the more mysterious belonging becomes. I gnaw on the bone of belonging and begin to question its true meaning. Is belonging just “fitting in”? Is it always a good thing?

Wandering Through Savernake Forest

Savernake Forest once spanned 150 square miles of Wiltshire downland, full of wild boar, bears, and deer. Local villages would have sat deep in its dense woods. You could easily get lost.

These days, roads and Capability Brown’s avenues hem in the forest. Forestry Commission maintains it. However, we still find cool conifer plantations, moss-covered ruins, tussocky fields with Hereford cattle, winding paths, and deer. The forest remains wild and untamed. And I still get lost there, all the time.

The Cultural Power of Forests

Forests shape our imagination: Shakespeare’s enchanted woods, Hansel and Gretel’s terrifying forest. They invite wonder and fear.

Letting the Forest Lead

My trips to Savernake lack supplies. Just a sausage roll and a pencil sharpener. I don’t explore the forest — I let the forest explore me. I leave the map behind and lose myself by design.

An Invitation to Wander

This book invites you to get lost with me. Each chapter bears the name of an oak in Savernake Forest—each helped me in my wandering. If we belong anywhere, perhaps we belong here.
