A festive fright in Scroogeways

A quirky Christmas show mixing puppets, actors and supermarket mayhem to spark children’s love of reading

Set in a 1990s supermarket, Supermarket Scrooge follows Wilameana Scrooge, the hard-nosed owner of Scroogeways, as she slowly discovers there’s more to Christmas than chasing profit. This playful adaptation brings Charles Dickens’ classic themes to life through a brilliant mix of live actors and puppet characters.

At the stroke of midnight on Christmas Eve, Wilameana’s neatly stacked aisles become a haunt for ghostly products. A jolly Cockney Brussels Sprout steps in as the Ghost of Christmas Past, while a chatty game-show-host Gift Box appears as the Ghost of Christmas Present. Most terrifying of all is the Ghost of Christmas Future — a silent, frozen turkey looming with icy judgement.

Along the way, audiences meet Tiny Ted, a loyal carrier-bag dog, and a hilariously irritating self-service till that never stops shouting about “unidentified items in the bagging area.” Together, they create a shopping trip like no other.

Supermarket Scrooge is the second instalment in a series designed to inspire children to fall in love with books and storytelling. The production is supported by a specially created book that helps new readers build their own version of the tale, complete with cut-out paper puppets to act out the scenes.

Wild Boor Ideas are also offering a range of pre-show workshops at schools and libraries, online activities, visits to special educational needs schools and relaxed performances during the run at Pegasus Theatre. These all form part of the Book Bonding Project – a programme that connects live theatre with a lifelong love of stories and reading.
