Modern-Day Adoption Guide: Forever Families Gives Real Voices to a Complex Journey
A powerful new modern-day adoption guide, Forever Families: The Highs and Lows of Modern-Day Adoption, sheds light on the joys and challenges of adoption in the UK. The book brings together the real voices of adoptive families, offering heartfelt stories and honest insights.
Published by the Reading-based charity Parenting Special Children (PSC), this guide is both a moving collection of lived experiences and a vital resource for current and prospective adopters. It comes at a critical time, following the UK government’s recent cuts to the Adoption Support Fund—raising serious concerns about access to therapeutic care for vulnerable children.
Real Stories From Real Families
This modern-day adoption guide features 34 personal stories, brought together by authors Shirley Anstis and Zobia Kalim. The adoptive parents share everything—from the life-changing moment of adoption to the daily struggles of finding appropriate support.
“These are real-life experiences shared with honesty and courage,” said Zobia Kalim, PSC’s Trauma Service Manager. “This book amplifies voices that are often overlooked and shows just how vital long-term support is.”
A Practical Guide With Purpose
Beyond stories, the guide includes practical advice for anyone considering adoption. It outlines emotional realities while offering clear recommendations for policymakers, CAMHS, adoption agencies, children’s services, educators, and more.
Designed with Care and Empathy
Available now on Amazon, Forever Families also stands out visually. University of Reading design students Alice Lofting and Mariam Al-Alami created the book’s warm and thoughtful layout, capturing each family’s story with sensitivity and care.
