Author and local historian Mike White is encouraging readers to rediscover Wantage with his new interactive book, Where in Wantage?, a photographic puzzle trail revealing the hidden details and fascinating stories behind the market town’s streets.

Think you know Wantage? Local author and historian Mike White is inviting residents and visitors alike to put their local knowledge to the test with his latest book, Where in Wantage?

The idea is deceptively simple. The book presents a series of close-up photographs taken around Wantage, featuring everything from statues and clocks to unusual windows, decorative brickwork and even a waterfall. Readers are challenged to work out where each image was taken before turning the page to discover the answer and learn a little local history along the way.

“It’s a fun way to spend a couple of hours exploring the town. It also works well for families looking for something different to do, especially during the school holidays,” says Mike.

Now happily retired and living in Grove, Mike has more time to devote to his many interests, including local history, writing and community projects. He attended King Alfred’s School and, apart from a decade spent in Gloucestershire, has remained closely connected to Wantage throughout his life.

His passion for local heritage runs through much of his work. Alongside writing books, Mike leads the hugely popular Wantage Ghost Walks and regularly gives talks to community groups about the area’s rich history. He is also involved with a number of local organisations, including Wantage Literary Festival, Wantage Writers Group, the Vale and Downland Museum, u3a and the Oxfordshire Local History Association.

When asked what he most loves about the area, his answer is simple: “The fact that there are such a wide range of activities to keep one occupied.”

Mike is also keen to champion independent businesses, giving particular praise to Wantage Bookshop.

“They’ve been incredibly supportive of my writing,” he says. “As well as being a brilliant bookshop.”
