Few things beat stepping off a train in London, knowing your hotel is less than a five-minute walk away and there’s no need to wrestle your luggage through the Underground.
Even better? Arriving on one of the hottest days of the year to be greeted with an ice lolly and a cold bottle of water before you’ve even checked in.
After melting my way through Paddington, it was exactly what I needed. Such a simple gesture, but it instantly made me feel looked after. I’m a firm believer that these small, thoughtful touches stay with you the longest.
For those of us living in the Home Counties, it’s easy to overlook London as a weekend destination. We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to restaurants, events and world-class attractions, so the capital can sometimes feel too familiar to warrant a getaway. But a weekend in the city can feel every bit as special – and it’s incredibly easy to do.
Forget airport queues, luggage restrictions and painfully early alarms. Simply hop on the train and, before you know it, you’re in the heart of one of the world’s most exciting cities, ready to make the most of a hassle-free escape.
Hidden just around the corner from Paddington Station, The Pilgrm occupies a beautifully restored Victorian townhouse.
It’s effortlessly stylish but equally inviting. It encapsulates the warmth of a beautifully designed home, with reclaimed wood, vintage furniture, cosy corners and soft lighting – and the thoughtful touches continue upstairs.
A handwritten welcome note awaited me alongside complimentary Pelegrims products – the same citrus-scented range used throughout the hotel.
Following an invigorating shower, I connected my phone to the Marshall speaker – provided in the room – before heading out for the evening.
The rooms are compact but bijou, with everything you need. A wonderfully comfortable bed and an uncluttered space make it surprisingly easy to switch off despite being in the hustle and bustle of London.
Sustainability also feels authentically embedded rather than a marketing buzzword, from restored original features and reclaimed furniture to refillable toiletries, water stations and handy pantry kitchens.
Downstairs, the café has exactly the sort of atmosphere you hope to find in the city. Guests and locals mingle over Monmouth coffee, leisurely breakfasts and brunch favourites. I only intended to stop for a quick drink while writing this article, but an hour somehow disappeared. Not that I’m complaining!
The location is equally hard to beat. Hyde Park is a short stroll away, Little Venice is perfect for a sunny afternoon wander and Notting Hill’s colourful streets and independent shops are all within easy reach.
By the time I boarded my train home, I was already wondering when I could justify another night away.
