Enjoy free mulled wine and homemade mince pies at a festive open afternoon in Compton, with the chance to win a luxury countryside escape.

Fancy a peek inside one of West Berkshire’s loveliest countryside hideaways? The Railway Retreat is throwing open its doors on Thursday 17 December 2026, inviting visitors to drop by between 3pm and 7pm for a festive afternoon of mince pies, mulled wine and Christmas cheer.

Owners Chantal Cornelius and William Buist will be welcoming guests to their beautifully restored oak-framed Retreat, which will be decked out for the festive season.

Visitors can have a look around the cosy hideaway, discover its charming interiors and get a feel for what makes it such a special spot for a countryside escape.

And, of course, it wouldn’t be Christmas without a few treats. There’ll be homemade mince pies and warming mulled wine made with wine from a local vineyard, all completely free to enjoy.

There’s another good reason to pop along, too. Everyone who attends will have the chance to enter a competition to win a luxury overnight stay at The Railway Retreat – a tempting prize for anyone dreaming of a peaceful break away from it all.

Tucked away on the edge of Compton in the North Wessex Downs, the Retreat has been lovingly transformed from a former workshop, retaining its original oak beams and character while adding modern comforts.

Outside, there’s a private garden and an orchard following the route of the old Newbury and District railway line, with the Ridgeway National Trail just two miles away.

Whether you’re curious to see inside, fancy a festive pit stop or simply can’t resist a homemade mince pie, everyone is welcome to join the celebrations.
