The Blenheim Palace Flower Show, sponsored by Sofas & Stuff, returns to the beautiful grounds of Blenheim Palace from Friday 21st to Sunday, 23rd June

Featuring more stands and floral features than before, including a new for 2024 Fairground Fuchsia Carousel, this year’s Blenheim Palace Flower Show is sure to impress.

The magnificent Grand Floral Pavilion returns, as well as incredible outdoor floral displays in Floral Street, a brand-new plant inspired Butterfly Trail, talks and demonstrations from gardening experts, fabulous food and drink, homeware and crafts, plus live entertainment.

“It’s wonderful to be returning to Blenheim Palace,” said Mig Kimpton, horticultural curator for the Blenheim Palace Flower Show. “It’s such a stunning estate to be working in.

Our Grand Floral Pavilion is always at the heart of the show, and our outside Floral Street creates some wonderful displays that always impress visitors.”

Now in its 11th year, the show has grown in size and popularity, attracting thousands of visitors year on year to marvel at the stunning floral displays, receive advice and tips from expert plantsmen and treat their gardens to an array of gardening goodies from hundreds of exhibitors.

Step inside the Grand Floral Pavilion and marvel at the stunning Fuchsia Carousel, a 20ft moving display, resembling the classic fairground ride.

Following the success of last year’s Insect Trail, this year visitors will also be invited on a very special and creative Butterfly Trail around the show where florists, flower arrangers, students and artists have designed, built, and created large scale butterflies made from natural materials and flowers to display at the show. Visitors will be able to choose their favourite butterfly and the designer will win a People’s Choice Award.

As part of the talks and displays throughout the weekend, the Oxfordshire Beekeepers Association will be giving live hire demonstrations with the chance for the public to ask questions and learn more about the importance of bees and pollination.

In the Talks Theatre, plantsmen and floral experts will give talks and demonstrations on all gardening topics, sharing their tips and advice on all garden matters, visitors will be able to purchase plants from their nurseries directly at the show.

The ‘Shop and Drop’ Marquee will give visitors the opportunity to drop off their shopping while they still enjoy the show before making their way back to the their vehicle.

The show also features an Outdoor Plant Village, Fine Food & Drinks Pavilion, Home & Interiors Pavilion and so much more.

The Blenheim Palace Flower Show runs from 10am to 5pm on Friday 21st, Saturday 22nd and Sunday, 23rd June. Free parking will be available for all visitors. Tickets are available online via Blenheim Flower Show

A cordial invitation to Regency Week

Immerse yourself in the world of Jane Austen with dances, walks, talks, workshops and more from June 21st to 30th.

Alton Jane Austen Regency Week has been extended to a 10th day by popular demand to allow people to collect costumes ordered for the Summer Ball for the following day or attend a workshop to produce decorative accessories to wear with them.

There will also be a Welcome Reception in the evening to collect tickets, meet the organisers and hear from our Patron and Guest of Honour, Caroline Knight, Jane Austen’s five times great niece, who grew up at Chawton House.

Most of the first weekend will follow the regular pattern; Regency Day on Saturday with the Regency Market in the Town Centre, followed by a Dance Workshop in the afternoon and Summer Ball in the evening.

The Festivities move to Chawton on Sunday morning with a visit to Jane Austen’s house, a walk round the village and a parade to Chawton House for a picnic lunch with Caroline Knight. Tea at the Allen Gallery is followed by Regency Choral Evensong with the renowned St Lawrence Church Choir.

Monday starts with a talk about Embroidered Paper and continues with an afternoon at Wyards Farm, the home of Jane’s favourite niece and regularly visited by her, before ending with a Midsummer evening at Chawton House.

Tuesday it’s on to Gilbert White’s House at Selborne for a sewing workshop and House and Garden tours. In the evening the Allen Gallery will show the 1940 film version of Pride and Prejudice starring Laurence Olivier.

Wednesday brings a bonnet workshop while the more energetic can opt for a guided walk around Alton. Take part in a parasol decorating workshop and enjoy a talk about Mr Darcy from Jessica Bull and Louise Morrish covering Jessica’s new book.

The Lunchtime Regency Organ Concert at St Lawrence Church will wake everyone up after a quiet morning in the library exploring their Jane Austen book collection, followed by a discussion of Northanger Abbey at the Friends’ Meeting House before an evening circular walk around Chawton.

Friday will be spent in Chawton with two hours at Chawton House during the day and Jane Austen’s house will be open during the evening until 8pm.

The morning is divided between Chawton and Alton on Saturday starting with a tour of Jane Austen’s house followed by guided walk of Chawton. At the same time there will be children’s Regency inspired crafts at Alton Library. The increasingly popular Country Dance will be held at the Assembly Rooms in the evening.

The 10th and last day, Sunday 30th, features a guided walk of Alton in the morning and a Book Fair at the Community Centre during the day. The week closes with the popular Regency Supper at Jane Austen’s house in the evening.

Fizz fest at The Grange, Alresford

Hampshire’s world class still and sparkling wines will be showcased at The Grange, Alresford on Sunday, 23rd June

The Vineyards of Hampshire Fizz Fest is back for its 10th year offering visitors the chance to taste more than 20 world class Hampshire sparkling and still wines.

Wine makers and vineyard owners are on hand to showcase their wine portfolio including new vintages. Wine lovers can join a range of masterclasses, tour the vineyard and winery and enjoy Hampshire street food and live music as well as taking your favourite wines home.

This year the event will coincide for the first time with English Wine Week, (15th-23rd June, WineGB) including a range of local celebrations promoting Hampshire wines. The Grange’s winery adjoins Burges Field Vineyard, home to 52,000 vines which produce the award-winning The Grange wines.

“Fizz Fest provides the perfect opportunity to taste all of the best wines to be found in Hampshire and we are very much looking forward to hosting this showcase event and we are all proud for it to have reached its 10th year. We opened our state-of-the-art winery here in 2022, with the purpose of servicing our young vineyard and blending and producing our own wine. This year we are now able to do just that,” says Zam Baring, Managing Partner for The Grange wines.

During the day, the tasting tent will host wines and new vintages from all eight members: Black Chalk in Andover, Danebury Vineyards in Stockbridge, Exton Park, Hambledon and The Grange, Hattingley, Louis Pommery England and Raimes, all Alresford.

One Planet Living Festival: 15th June

One Planet Abingdon (OPA) is hosting an event in June to celebrate Abingdon’s culture and community by bringing everyone together.

The environment group is collaborating with other community organisations and charities to stage the One Planet Living Festival on Saturday, June 15th, from 10am to 5pm in the Market Place. The festival will feature a range of eco traders, information on sustainable living, and activities and performances for all ages.

OPA co-founder Michelle Charlesworth expressed her excitement: “It has been my vision since the conception of One Planet that we would come together as a community. This collaboration is the realization of that vision, showcasing our rich culture and community. We can enjoy one another’s tradition, music, and stories, truly connecting as we continue our journey to a one planet living town.”

OPA is partnering with Evoking Belonging, the Abingdon Events Partnership, and Abingdon Town Council to bring this festival to the town. Local businesses such as Taiwil Fashions, Planted Plates, and Tribe Zero will host stalls promoting the ten principles aimed at creating a better world. Abingdon’s Morris Dancers and local artists will perform, representing the diverse cultures of Abingdon.

Dianne Regisford of Evoking Belonging highlighted the importance of social cohesion: “As more African-Caribbean and other ethnic origin families come to live in Abingdon, the social, cultural, and racial dynamics of the town change. To ensure a vibrant, socially cohesive, and economically buoyant town, it’s imperative to create strategies and opportunities for all to thrive. This is a social justice vision of belonging for all.”

OPA, launched in 2021 in response to Abingdon Town Council’s climate and ecological emergency declaration, runs the Climate Emergency Centre (CEC) under the County Hall Museum. The CEC provides refreshments for visitors while exploring the implications of transitioning to zero carbon living, a target set by the national government. The volunteer-led organisation welcomes anyone concerned about the environment to get involved.

The One Planet Living principles are: Health and happiness, Equity and local economy, Culture and community, Land and nature, Sustainable water, Local and sustainable food, Travel and transport, Materials and products, Zero waste, and Zero carbon energy.

Honouring D-Day at The Shed

Commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day at The Shed and in Bordon town centre

The Shed will be a central part of Whitehill & Bordon’s events commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day on Saturday, 8th June when visitors will go on a trip back in time with a series of military-themed nostalgic entertainment with music and food from the era.

From 2pm The Shed will be marking the town’s military heritage and hosting its own themed tribute to the Normandy landings with stalls and displays at the Town Park. There will be music and food from the era and an atmosphere of commemoration and celebration throughout the day and into the evening:

• 2-3pm: Performances by Jack Trinder and the Forest Players
• 3-4pm: Performance by Liss Brass Brand
• 4-5pm: Stephanie Belle our WW2 themed singer
• 6pm onwards: Vic Cracknell’s Jazz Band

The Phoenix Theatre will also be providing a ‘silent disco’ for an immersive D-Day experience, stalls will be selling home-made craft of militaria from the era, and Shed vendors are set to get into the spirit with spam fritters, Spitfire beer and dressing up throughout.

Free parking will be available in all areas, including Hogmoor Inclosure for the weekend of 8-9th June.

Alfie Boe’s Encore with Carly Paoli

Alfie Boe will star with Carly Paoli at Aylesbury’s Waterside Theatre on Friday, 7th June.

When Pope Francis heard Carly Paoli, the British/Italian soprano sing her Ave Maria as the official song for his Jubilee Year of Mercy in 2016, he declared that she had, ‘the voice of an angel.’ A classical Brit nominee, lyricist and star of the classical and crossover worlds, Carly Paoli toured the UK with Aled Jones 2022.

Carly has been confirmed as a special guest on Alfie Boe’s forthcoming tour Alfie Boe – Encore at theatres around the UK this summer.

Carly and the Tony Award winning tenor, Alfie Boe first met when Alfie worked with Carly on her second TV special that is set to air later this year. With a broad repertoire to choose from, Carly’s set will include interpretations of Bridge Over Troubled Water, Time To Say Goodbye, Never Enough and O Mio Babbino Caro amongst others.

“One of the greatest joys for a performer is to work with artist they admire,” says Carly. “Aflie Boe is one of those people and I am thrilled to be appearing as his special guest on his Encore Tour.”

Carly’s star continues to shine and since bursting onto the music scene she has sung for members of the Royal Family at Windsor Castle and St James’ Palace, at the Royal Albert Hall for the Royal Variety Performance and at Carnegie Hall in New York. Following her concert at London’s Cadogan Hall, the critic David Mellor called her a ‘special talent’ under the headline “Nobody Does It Better.”

In 2016 Carly’s version of Ave Maria was heard by Pope Francis who commented that she had “the voice of an angel” and was chosen as theme for his Jubilee Year Mercy. That same year Carly hosted a very special concert Music for Mercy in Rome’s historic Roman Forum featuring Andrea Bocelli, Elaine Paige and David Foster amongst others. In 2023 Carly could be seen opening and closing Pope Francis’ concert for Humanitarian Efforts at St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican which was broadcast globally to more than 55 million people.

A performer at many major sporting fixtures, in 2023, Carly was invited to sing the Italian National Anthem at the opening ceremony of the very first Ryder Cup in Rome.

With five chart topping albums to her credit Carly has performed live and recorded with some of the world’s greatest artists including Andrea Bocelli, Michael Bolton, José Carreras, David Foster, and Elaine Paige and will soon be adding Alfie Boe to that list of names!

June heralds the start of summer and that means one thing – spending time in the garden with your nearest and dearest with a drink in one hand and a burger in the other, enjoy!

Can there be anything better than enjoying lazy summer days in the company of friends and family soaking up the sun’s rays while sipping something cool and refreshing in your garden?

With the image in your head and before you reach for another ice cube to plonk in that drink, there’s some prep to do.

There’s something special about sitting out eating on your patio or decking that feels almost luxurious, perhaps thoughts of sun-soaked holidays are in your mind, so how to recreate that at home.*

Imagine your outdoor space is another room in your home, the lawn is the carpet, plants the decoration, you get the idea so just as you’d fashion your indoor space why not do the same outdoors with a few additions / exceptions / tweaks.

The biggest difference of course, is that you are outdoors so top priority has to be shelter or a shade of some variety to allow for the vagaries of the great British weather. We all know how unpredictable it can be but don’t let that deter you and yours from dining al fresco. Storage space is a useful addition so you can leave some utensils there permanently and of course, the obligatory chef’s apron, while a fresh herb garden will enhance the flavours of your food for extra special finishing touches.

You can’t enjoy the full al fresco experience without a drink, outdoor bars became all the rage during that time a few years ago when we couldn’t go out but as long as you’ve got plenty of ice you’ll be doing fine.

Go wild this June for BBOWT

Do one wild thing every day for a month this summer, as the UK’s biggest free nature challenge returns for its 10th anniversary from June 1st to 30th.

Could you do one thing to connect with nature every day for a month and feel happier and healthier as a result? That is the 30 Days Wild challenge being laid down by Berkshire, Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (BBOWT).

This June promises to be a bumper 30 Days Wild – people of all ages and abilities are urged to participate and BBOWT are offering free herb seeds and an inspirational guide to everyone who signs up to do one wild thing every day during the month. There are also special packs for schools, businesses and care homes.

Estelle Bailey, Chief Executive of BBOWT, said: “With wildlife in crisis across the UK, it seems fair to ask – are we still a nation of nature lovers? I believe the answer is a resounding yes. This year is the 10th anniversary of both 30 Days Wild and my own time with Berkshire, Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust. Over those 10 years I’ve had the privilege of seeing our communities’ commitment to restoring nature where they live and enjoying all it has to offer. While our first year of running 30 Days Wild saw just over five hundred people sign up across our three countries, last year more than four thousand took on the challenge, which is brilliant.

“This momentum comes as no great surprise – connecting with nature is so important for our sanity and general wellbeing. My top tips to enjoy 30 Days Wild: Sit, walk, run, lay on the grass, look up, look down, fix on something, don’t be afraid to touch or smell it. Smile at the sun, throw your arms out in the rain, get wet, walk barefoot on grass and bare earth, have a cuddle with a tree – be in the moment.”

Supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, 30 Days Wild encourages individuals, families, schools, and businesses to connect with nature on a daily basis during what many argue is the best month for wildlife spotting. It could be going on a snail safari, eating your breakfast outdoors or closing your eyes to listen for bird song, to more adventurous endeavours such as outdoor yoga or forest bathing. This year’s participants will receive a special 10th anniversary park, designed to make their 30 days even more fun.

The 10th anniversary marks a real milestone for The Wildlife Trusts’ flagship 30 Days Wild initiative. The nature challenge has grown from 12,000 participants nationally in its first year to over half a million last year alone. 30 Days Wild has helped people to get outside, enjoy and connect with nature as part of their everyday lives.

Research has consistently highlighted the positive impact of nature on well-being. A study found a significant increase in people’s health, happiness, and connection to nature through participating in 30 Days Wild. People reported feeling more relaxed, reduced stress levels, and a greater motivation to protect wildlife which lasted long after the campaign ended.

He returns, Fri 21 June, with a varied programme of Schubert (his speciality), Rzewski’s Cotton Mill Blues and the Piano Sonata (2019) by leading American composer, Philip Glass.

This month’s Wilde Sundays present Jess Tuthill + Mayor of Dorkshire + Bryony Heart on Sun 23 June. Get ready for hilarious original songs and personal takes on powerful pop, all blended into an afternoon of acoustic tunes.

The students of Artemis College present Our House: The Madness Musical on Thu 27 – Sat 29 June. This Olivier Award-winning musical by Tim Firth is a high-energy fun love story featuring the hits of Madness.

Back by popular demand, it’s a drag queen and international cabaret legend, Fonda Cox in the Cellar Bar on Thu 27 June. With a career that has spanned three decades, Fonda Cox is a larger-than-life performer who has left a trail of glitter across the stages of Europe.

Conservatoire International Concert Series’ third session of the month brings pianist Yehuda Inbar on Fri 28 June. He performs a beautifully chosen programme that includes music by Mozart, Schumann (his Scenes from Childhood), Debussy and concludes with Schubert’s masterly Sonata in A minor.

Book a tour of South Hill Parts Art Centre and explore behind the scenes of the mansion and theatre. You will be able to visit different rooms and venue spaces whilst learning about the history of the Arts Centre and some exciting upcoming performances. This month the tours are at 12pm & 2pm on Sun 16 June.
