Shore thing: Beachcroft Hotel review

Round & About

Archie Tracey takes his parents Grace & Dave for a doggie-friendly seaside break at The Beachcroft Hotel in West Sussex and finds his puppy power recharged, despite the wet weather

Just a pebble’s throw from the big salty sea, The Beachcroft Hotel emulates beachfront vibes throughout. Lots of TLC has gone into making it feel like a home from home with a truly British seaside holiday feel. So when I checked in with my mom & pop I couldn’t stop wagging my tail, even though the weather was grey and mizzly!

No wonder: our dog-friendly room had a bed for me, a toy, some biscuits and food bowls. French doors lead to a secluded little stony courtyard with seats for some fresh air.

I did try to eat a few of the tasty-looking faux plants but my parents retrieved them before I could mangle them, slotting them back in like it had never happened. The bathroom was just big enough for my bed too, so I had space to chill with my treats, giving them a break.

I’m only four months old, so I need hourly toilet breaks and these were the most scenic of my young life, admiring the beautiful West Sussex coastline, lined by pretty beach huts.

The three of us had dinner in the hotel restaurant both evenings of our stay as we were so dazzled on the first night and didn’t see the point in venturing out. I was thrilled to see a separate menu for diners with their canine companions and the staff were amazingly friendly, giving me a little fuss when we arrived, and making sure I was happy and watered while the grown-ups ate. They gave top marks to the cream of cauliflower soup, slow-cooked pork belly, pan-seared sea bass and a yummy tonka bean cheesecake to share. My mum has a sweet tooth in the mornings and can’t handle a savoury breakfast so she refuelled with delicious pastries, continental and hot breakfasts.

On the Saturday, we took a short drive to Pagham Beach and I was allowed in the sea! My favourite bit was chasing a ball and trying to catch the seagulls (I failed). When I got too chilly, they took me back into the cosy warm, drying me off and warming up with hot, tasty churros. There was a massive arcade there too – next time I will take my puppy wallet so I’ve got pennies to play.

Those friendly humans at the hotel gave us a picnic basket. Because the clouds above us were so leaky, we enjoyed this indoors. I spent most of the time begging for scraps from the delicious contents: I sniffed out sliced meat, pate, olives, bread, fruit and even a dissected mimosa. This made mom & pop very happy.

We had a wonderful stay, our spirits never dampened by the weather. Now I feel like a seasoned traveller, I recommend you book in for a weekend getaway or longer, especially if you also have human children as there’s so much family-friendly fun to be had. You can enter our competition (see the page in the magazine for details) to be in with a chance of winning a couple’s break. I give Beachcroft a pawfect score!
