Life is all about the journey and not the destination. And the newly published book Little Paws Big Memories: ABC Animals by Emma Bishop was inspired by Michael & Emma’s journey from heartache to hope.

When Emma’s pregnancy took a harrowing turn in early 2023, including extreme sickness, multiple hospital admissions, and the looming uncertainty of her husband Michael’s Crohn’s surgery, as well as her father Brian’s ill health, she could never have imagined how her darkest days would inspire something beautiful for other families.

The arrival of baby Isla last spring was joyous — but newborn life has its own stresses, triggering another hospital stay for Michael and the sad news that Emma’s dad had roughly a year left to live — news that gave the family both precious time and heartache.

How it began

Each afternoon last summer Emma, with Isla settled in her lap, would sketch and design pages for the ABC Animals Starter Kit. Every animal outline she completed was a way to thank her dad, distract her mind from grief, and celebrate the joy he’d always brought her. The beautiful baby keepsake book contains page after page of elegant illustrations of animals, with special spaces for the parents to add the child’s handprint or footprint.

Each spread includes a Memories of You prompt, so families can capture anecdotes they might otherwise forget: first giggles, Grandma’s nickname for baby, or her first sleep through the night. A pouch at the back holds ultrasound scans, hospital bands and photos. The book kit (£25) comes with four “clean-touch” ink pads sized for little hands – quick, mess-free and able to capture impressions about four to five times each, ensuring every tiny digit is preserved without smudges. The lavishly thick pages, presented in a lay-flat design, and presented in a strong magnetic gift box, has already won praise from other parents. It’s a beautiful, heartfelt gift that new parents will love. Emma & Michael’s leap of faith paid off in May when the ABC Animals Starter Kit won the First Time Mums’ Choice Award 2025 in the Baby Shower Gift / Newborn Keepsake category — proof that analogue memories still hold a magic digital data can’t touch.

“Technology has made it so easy to take videos and photos, but if you are anything like us, once you remove them off your phone, they get lost in a vast sea of media,” says Emma. “I truly believe that this book is all about recording the memories you’d otherwise forget. It’s a compilation that you can pull off the shelf and relive all your favourite and happiest moments. We’re really excited to help other parents inspired by our emotional journey. Time is precious so do something today that you will thank yourself for tomorrow! It’s all about the journey and not the destination. This book is the journey.”
